Relationship among Empathy and Communication Skill and Perceived Peer Group Caring Behaviors in Nursing Students

Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of the study was to explore the levels of empathy, communication skill and perceived peer group caring behaviors in nursing students and identify influential factors on peer group caring behaviors.

Methods : The data was collected from 181 nursing students in one university located Gyeonggi province in December 2018 through structured questionnaires. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients, and hierarchial regression analysis.

Results : The mean item scores of empathy, communication skill and perceived peer group caring behaviors in nursing students were all at a moderate level. Empathy significantly differed by gender and empathy, communication skill and perceived peer group caring behaviors significantly differed by satisfaction with nursing as a major. Perceived peer group caring behaviors had a positive relationship with their empathy and communication skill. As a result of multiple regression analysis, major satisfaction, empathy and communication skill were identified as factors affecting perceived peer group caring behaviors. The explanatory power of variance was 20.2% and the most important factor was empathy.

Conclusion : To promote perceived peer group caring behaviors for nursing students, it is necessary to develop education program to improve empathy and communication skill and to increase the major satisfaction.
